DIM is an active component of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, and collards). Experimental studies have shown that DIM helps maintain and promote a healthy hormonal balance.
There are "good" and "bad" versions of hormones like estrogen and testosterone. Taking DIM helps increase the amount of good hormones and decreases the formation of bad hormones. This helps lower the risk of breast cancer and also promotes prostate health.
Because of the relationship of hormones to breast and prostate health, DIM has been used to maintain healthy tissues and to treat related health issues such as breast or prostate cancer.*
Suggested Use: Take one (1) to two (2) capsules daily, or as directed by your physician or healthcare provider
Caution: Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Good and Bad Estrogens
To put it simply, one class of estrogens is considered favorable and perhaps protective against breast cancer. Other types may actually increase the risk of cancer. Studies have shown that women with breast or uterine cancer had made too little of the "good" estrogen and too much of the "bad" estrogen. It's also been shown that those were obese, had high-fat diets, and were exposed to harmful environmental chemicals had high levels of bad estrogens.
However, the good news is that we can take our own estrogens and turn them into the good kind or the bad kind.
Chemical Exposure and Estrogens
Chemical exposure is a primary cause for the formation of the bad type of estrogens, especially if the body has insufficient levels of antioxidants and a lack of cruciferous-vegetable nutrients to counteract their formation. In this generation, we have an unprecedented amount of chemical exposure because of pollutants in the air and water. This is clearly evident in the rise in breast cancer, which has greatly increased over the last 30 years, largely due to these environmental pollutants.
Effect of DIM on Estrogen and Testosterone
While DIM is not a hormone itself, it helps promote the good estrogen while reducing the bad estrogen. The same can be said for testosterone. Testosterone can be changed to the unfavorable kind, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which can have negative effects on the prostate. Research studies have shown that DIM decreases the negative effects of DHT on the prostate.
